Vatican Sees Government Conspiracy to Attack the Family

GENEVA -- Pope John Paul II has uncovered a conspiracy among the world's parliaments and governments to attack the family, a Vatican representative told the World Congress of Families II on Wednesday.
"People who forget the family and don't support it with their laws and permit bonds to be broken are conducting an assault on the future of mankind," said Alfonso Cardinal Lopez Trujillo, a native of Colombia who is president of the Pontifical Council for the Family.
Trujillo spoke to 1,500 delegates who gathered to discuss what they perceive as attacks on the "natural" family. While he mentioned a global conspiracy, he did not single out any conspirators.
"Much of what is being done to destroy the family will tomorrow be the subject of shame just as today we are ashamed of slavery and apartheid," he said. "The near future society will be ashamed of not protecting the natural institution."
Some say motherhood "is a form of slavery," but that is not true, Trujillo said.
"Women have every right to make something of themselves," he said, "but she should not forget who she is. She has certain values and she educates the world."
Trujillo condemned Latin American governments that recognize what he called "de facto unions," or common-law marriages.
"These simply mean the desire to come together without any goal of establishing a permanent union or the future or of giving," he said. "Some want to adopt legislation that these unions have a great scope that has been reserved for families alone."
Trujillo also attacked the idea of recognizing same-sex unions.
"This is supposed to ensure no discrimination," he said. "But [such a union has] no fertility and is not the design of God. There should always be a union of the flesh and of life."
And adoptions by gay and lesbian couples are bad for children, he said.
The family is not the outcome of dialogue in parliament, Trujillo said, "but it is the design of God and the basis of everything. It has its roots in man's hearts."
