Claims: love prompts men to help around the house

Wednesday 14 April, 1999

A new study suggests men who are truly in love with their partners are more likely to offer to do the housework or mind the children.

The Queensland University of Technology surveyed 90 newly married Queensland couples about their domestic arrangements.

Dr Barry Burdon says while most men are doing more housework than before, they are still doing much less than their female partners.

But he says men who are happy in their relationships are more likely to do their share...without objecting.

"I think it's to do with respect," Dr Burdon said.

"I think when there's a strong relationship there is mutual respect there as well and there's a respect that we're in this together and we'll work on things together."
