ST. PAUL, Posted 9:03 p.m. -- Getting premarital counseling
could save couples a few bucks on their marriage licenses.
The House
Civil Law Committee endorsed a plan that would give a $50
break on marriage licenses to couples who get at least 12 hours
of premarital counseling. Marriage licenses currently cost $70.
Representative Elaine Harder knows it's not much, but hopes
the price break might give couples some small incentive to make
sure they're compatible.
The counseling would have to be done through a church or licensed
family therapist. It would have to cover issues such as conflict
management and the benefits of seeking counseling in times of
marital difficulty.
The bill now goes to the House
Ways and Means Committee.
The Senate
Crime Prevention and Judiciary Budget Division earlier approved
a similar bill. But the Senate version would tack $50 onto divorce-filing
fees to offset revenue losses from the marriage license cut.
