Listening
to Children
|
|
Here is something
that we learn from Dr Denis Waitley through his
book "Seeds of Greatness" which
we found to be very true and applicable in our
effort of having a Quality Time with our son
Ryan.
As parents the greatest gift of all to our
children is our quality time. In this fast moving
world, parents tend to be busy with their career
an preoccupied with our daily works. Our
relationship with our children has been referred
to as "The Seven-Minutes-Per-week
Syndrome." Children spend more time watching
television than they do communicating with their
parents or acquiring an education.
Intimacy, touching, communicating, all takes
time. The most precious moments we can ever spend
with our children are those moments just before
they go to sleep at night. Many activities are
going on in the normal family in the early
evening. These is dinner, homework, chores,
computer games, finances, meetings, television,
phone calls, visitors, friends and pets, just to
name a few. Little wonder that the average
parents spend less than seven minutes each week
alone with each child, individually at a time
when each one is receptive. Here is a poem that
Dr. Denis Waitley wrote which we found very
awakening.
Take a Moment to ListenTake a
moment to listen
To what your children are trying to say;
Listen today, whatever you do
Or they won't be there to listen to you.
Listen to their problems, listen for
their needs,
Praise their smallest triumphs, praise
their smallest deeds;
Tolerate their chatter, amplify their
laughter,
Find out what's the matter, find out what
they're after.
But tell them that you love them,
every single night
And though you scold them, be sure you
hold them;
Tell them "Everything's all right;
tomorrow's looking bright!"
Take a moment to listen today
To what your children are trying to say;
Listen today, whatever you do
And they will come back to listen to you
